Wire Harness Sales: Your Q4 Number Is Being Decided This Month

I carry a number too. Every October I look at the calendar, count roughly 60 working days left in the year, and know that Thanksgiving and the holidays will take a real bite out of the final stretch. If you run sales or estimating at a wire harness manufacturer, you know exactly how that feels.

Here is what I have learned the hard way. The revenue you book in December is largely decided by the quotes you send in October. An RFQ that sits in the queue for two weeks right now is an order that lands in January, or lands with someone else.

I talk with sales and estimating leaders every week, and the story is usually the same. A strong pipeline going into Q4, and still a scramble to close the year. The problem is rarely demand. It is throughput: how quickly your team can turn an RFQ package into an accurate quote, and how quickly a won order can reach the floor.

Where Q4 time disappears

  • Incomplete RFQ packages. In a WHMA industry survey, 83% of manufacturers reported encountering customer design errors. I have watched good opportunities stall for days over a missing spec or a drawing conflict. Found after the quote goes out, it costs time. Found after the PO, it costs margin.
  • Manual quoting. 74% of manufacturers in the same survey described quoting as manual and too slow. In Q4, RFQ volume climbs, and the backlog grows faster than any estimating team can clear it. Nobody wants to tell a customer their quote will take a week in November.
  • Handoffs between teams. Information gets re-keyed from drawing to material list to wire list to routing. Every handoff adds time, and every handoff is another chance for something to slip.

How to get to your number faster

  1. Review feasibility on day one. Cableteque analyzes the RFQ package as soon as it arrives, identifies what is missing, and fills in the gaps. Your team goes back to the customer with the right questions up front, while the opportunity is still warm.
  2. Quote more without adding headcount. Cableteque customers see 70% faster quote turnaround and 5x quote capacity. That means your estimators respond to every RFQ, not just the ones they can get to first.
  3. Keep engineering and supply chain on the same page. Material and labor quoting happen on one platform, so pricing decisions are made with the full picture rather than pieced together across spreadsheets and email.
  4. Get won work to the floor faster. An order only counts once it ships. Cableteque automatically builds BOMs, wire lists, labor routing steps, and work instructions, cutting BOM creation time by 96%, so new orders move from PO to production without the usual NPI delay.

My Q4 game plan

This is how I approach the quarter with my own team, and it applies just as well on the manufacturing side.

  • October: Clear the backlog. Respond to every open RFQ. Speed matters most early in the quarter, when customers are still placing orders that can ship before year-end.
  • November: Follow up before Thanksgiving. Customers are finalizing year-end budgets. Every outstanding quote deserves a follow-up while there is still time to convert it.
  • December: Protect the floor. Release won orders with complete documentation so production is not waiting on engineering in the final weeks of the year.

The best Q4s I have had were not the ones where everyone worked longer hours. They were the ones where we stopped spending time on work that never needed to be manual in the first place.

If you want to see what that looks like on your own RFQs, reach out to me directly or book a live demo with our team. We will walk through a real package together and show you how much of Q4 you can get back.
